Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Board of Directors, Alexey Miller, said that the South Stream pipeline would be built by the end of 2015. He said that it would be built as quickly as the North Stream pipeline. Work began officially on the pipeline on Friday. Miller promises fast construction of South Stream Miller reminded that an agreement would be signed in late April with Austria, which would be the country that would have the storage facility that would supply Western Europe with Russian gas, the Russian news agency Itar-Tas stated. He added that this would be the last agreement and last country included in the pipeline project, and also mentioned that there were many countries whose territories the pipeline would not pass through interested in joining the project. The issue of building the underwater portion of the pipeline has still not been finalized with Romania, Miller said, adding that another option would be to have one leg of the pipeline go through Bulgaria, which would be located close enough for Romania to use. He said that these are only ideas, adding that the route has been confirmed and that South Stream would go from Russia under the Black Sea, through Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and Slovenia, to Austria. There would also be another leg of the pipeline going through Greece towards southern Italy. Miller said that he has no indications that the pipeline would not be completed by 2015.
