Current President of the Council of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Dejan Soskic is the most serious candidate to succeed Radovan Jelasic. This is according to Belgrade daily Blic, which says Soskic is favored by "the top levels of government". "Head of NBS Council DS favorite" Jelasic, of G17 Plus, resigned from the position last week for personal reasons. Now according to the newspaper, the ruling coalition is a step away from deciding to choose Soskic as the candidate. Member of NBS Council and former Vice-Governor Milojko Arsic and chief economist of the World Bank Dusan Vujovic are also on the shortlist, the same article says. Several candidates were interviewed last week, but the choice came down to these three, Blic claims and continues that G17 plus, which had previously suggested Vujovic, "in general agrees" that Soskic should be the next governor. According to the daily, Soskic will be proposed by Democratic Party (DS) which will, according to the coalition agreement, nominate the governor in this mandate. However, the final decision has not been made yet. The candidate's name should be announced by the end of the week. But, no one can say with certainty when this would happen. For that reason, Blic writes, its source talked about Soskic "not as the news governor", but as someone "being seriously considered“ for the post. When asked whether a completely new name could appear among the previously mentioned candidates, the source said it was not very likely. “Soskic and Arsic are definitely on the shortlist, and Dusan Vujovic is also among the candidates. But if we estimate who currently has the most chance, then that's Soskic,“ the source said.
