Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic said that construction of Corridor 10 will begin by September 1. He said that construction will begin either in agreement with the concessionaires or by the Serbian government financing it on its own. Corridor 10 construction to begin by September Mrkonjic told journalists at the opening of the Zajecar – Bor highway that the contract with the concessionaires for building Corridor 10 with the international Alpina consortium has not been broken off yet, adding there will be a decision made on what will happen with the contract by the end of August. “We will speak with people, we will see what happens and if we do work with the concessionaries, they will have to accept the obligations of the contract,” Mrkonjic said. He added that if no agreement is reached with the concessionaires, “we have to begin building ourselves on September 1.” Mrkonjic said that the construction of Corridor 10 is one of the priorities of the Serbian government and that a special law is being prepared, because EUR 1.7bn must be set aside in order for it to be completed. He said that the construction of the Belgrade-Cacak highway is another priority, along with modernizing the Serbian railway so that its trains can travel at 160 kilometers per hour. Mrkonjic said that the Serbian government has made very significant investments in traffic infrastructure, reminding of the recent formation of the National Council for Infrastructure.
