The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) spokesman in Novi Sad and 50 other local members have joined the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO). This "migration" happened during the past several months. DSS defections reported in Novi Sad This was confirmed on Sunday by SPO official Aleksandar Jugovic, who specified that spokesman Ivan Nozinic and others left "because they are dissatisfied with the party's policy". Jugovic said that a manifesto that was recently adopted, declaring the SPO to be "a European Serb rightwing", shows that while this party is "pro-European rightwing", others are "anti-European", thus prompting their members to defect. But DSS spokesman in Belgrade Borko Ilic says the reasons are of a different nature. "Considering that those are the people who are constantly seeking refuge in parties in power, this move can only strengthen us, since we do not need individuals of this kind," he said. "Most of them are employed with the public companies that are now controlled by the SPO, or are close to the SPO, and that was the main motive for their defection. In other words, a personal motive, rather than ideological, concerning our policy, or that of the SPO," Ilic explained.
