Rutte was asked at a press conference whether Russia was reckless enough to consider attacking any NATO member state. He replied that the Alliance does not currently believe this to be the case.

“We do not think so. There is no immediate threat to NATO territory. If we detect a military build-up, we will respond to it,” Rutte said.

He stressed that NATO’s message—which was also delivered earlier this week by the Alliance’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus Grynkewich—was clear: “We will defend every inch of our territory, regardless of whether people live there or not.”

However, he stressed that NATO would never initiate a conflict.

“We will never, absolutely never, launch an attack against anyone else, because that is not in our interest. We are a defensive alliance.”
