Seven people were killed, including two police officers and five civilians, and dozens were injured in an explosion at a market in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, a senior police official said. This is the second deadly attack in the region in four days, Reuters reported.

Explosion near the Afghanistan border

A bomb explosion at a market in Sarai Naurang, near the Bannu district on the border with Afghanistan, could further escalate tensions between the two neighboring countries, whose forces have already clashed this year.

Ambulances and fire service vehicles were deployed to the site of the explosion, a rescue agency involved in the operation said. Seriously injured victims were quickly transported to hospitals in Bannu, said senior police official Sajid Khan.

Local hospital administrator Muhammad Ishaq said that 37 patients have been admitted so far, some of them in critical condition. Footage from the market shows damaged shop fronts and a destroyed vehicle.

Pakistan blames militants from Afghanistan

In a suicide attack in the same province on Saturday, 15 police officers were killed. Pakistan blamed militants based in Afghanistan for the attack and sent a protest note to Kabul. The Taliban government in Afghanistan said on Monday that it had no comment for now.

Pakistan accuses Kabul of providing shelter to militants who use Afghan territory to plan attacks inside Pakistan. The Taliban reject these claims, arguing that militants are an internal problem of Pakistan.
