According to the latest information, the first case has also been recorded in a person who was not on the Dutch “death cruise,” as the media now call the vessel. It involves a French national who contracted Hantavirus after a flight with one of the ship’s passengers, French media report, citing a source from the Ministry of Health.

The case was detected during contact tracing of infected individuals, and according to Sky News, testing is underway to confirm whether it is the Andes virus—the only type of hantavirus known to be transmissible between humans.

Urgent search for 82 airline passengers

The World Health Organization is urgently trying to locate 82 passengers, as they may have been exposed to Hantavirus, raising concerns about further global spread, according to reports.

Infected individuals show symptoms such as fever, digestive issues, pneumonia, and difficulty breathing.

The virus is typically transmitted through contact with the urine, feces, or saliva of infected rodents, but the WHO suspects that human-to-human transmission may have occurred on the ship, according to reports by Bild.

How did the infection spread?

On April 25, a woman who had been on the cruise ship was transported from the island of Saint Helena to South Africa, where she later died in hospital from the effects of hantavirus.

Her husband and another person had also died earlier. Because of this, the World Health Organization is now trying to locate passengers from flight 4Z132, as they may also have been in contact with an infected individual.

Emergency evacuations from the cruise ship

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today that three passengers suspected of being infected with Hantavirus have been evacuated from the cruise ship “MV Hondius” and transferred to the Netherlands, and that at this stage the overall risk to public health remains low.

“Three passengers suspected of being infected with Hantavirus have been evacuated from the cruise ship and transferred to the Netherlands for medical treatment, in coordination with the World Health Organization, the ship operator, and the relevant authorities of Cape Verde, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the Netherlands,” wrote Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the X platform.

The Swiss government announced earlier today that a man infected with hantavirus is being treated in Zurich, emphasizing that there is currently no danger to the public.

According to reports, the man returned to Switzerland after being on the cruise ship “MV Hondius,” where multiple infection cases were recorded, BBC reports.

After returning from a trip to South America at the end of April, he went to the University Hospital in Zurich after experiencing symptoms.

“Death cruise ship heading toward Europe”

Meanwhile, the cruise ship has sailed toward the Canary Islands from Cape Verde, where it is currently anchored, the Spanish Ministry of Health said. It added on Tuesday evening that it expects to receive the ship in “three or four days,” but no final decision has been made yet on which Spanish port it will dock in.

The ship was reportedly directed toward Tenerife, but local authorities there refused to accept it, requesting an urgent meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

For now, there is only one doctor on board, but two more are expected to join the cruise ship, as medical assistance is urgently needed.
