Earlier, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called on European politicians to stop "knocking on the Kremlin’s door," arguing that it weakens Europe’s position, RIA Novosti reported.

When asked by journalists how the Kremlin views the fact that its “door is already being knocked on and battered,” Peskov replied that there is no need for attempts to contact Russia if they are not necessary.

“Neither (German Chancellor Friedrich) Merz nor (French President Emmanuel) Macron are trying to make contact with Russia – and there is truly no need to make any such attempts here. If they wish and if it is necessary, they could simply call President Putin. Putin has never refused direct contact,” Peskov said.

He described the approach of refusing contact with Russia as politically short-sighted and ignorant.

“Two camps have formed. Some increasingly say that, despite everything, we must start talking with the Russians, which is in line with our approach. Others, however, stick to the old approach – completely short-sighted, irrational, and unreasonable – that all contacts must be cut off and under no circumstances resumed,” he noted.

According to him, the Russian president supports establishing a dialogue with Europeans, as this is the only way to resolve existing disagreements.

Recently, leaders of several European countries have spoken about the need to restore interaction with Russia. This week, Emmanuel Macron announced that Moscow and Paris have renewed technical communication channels. The Kremlin confirmed this information but noted that it still does not see signs of dialogue at the highest level.

Moreover, in early February, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and Estonian President Alar Karis supported the idea of appointing a special EU envoy who could participate in negotiations on Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, on the other hand, called for an end to “knocking on the Kremlin’s door,” arguing that it supposedly weakens Europe’s position.

According to Politico, EU leaders could raise the issue of appointing a special representative at today’s informal meeting.
