French President Emmanuel Macron announced that technical preparations are underway in Paris for a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"The preparations are underway, and therefore discussions on this matter are being conducted at a technical level. This is being done transparently and in consultation with (Ukrainian) President Volodymyr Zelensky and our key European colleagues," he told reporters during a visit to the Haute-Saône department.

He added that France intends to continue supporting Ukraine, which is currently facing pressure on its energy sector due to the winter cold.

Meanwhile, recently French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian emphasized that it is necessary for Europeans to have a direct channel of communication with Russia that does not rely on intermediaries.
