Zelensky confirmed: There is no agreement
Although peace talks under U.S. auspices are ongoing, an agreement on the key issue of territory in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas is still nowhere in sight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed, Bloomberg News reports.
In a phone interview, Zelensky clarified that elements of the U.S. proposal require further discussions on a number of “sensitive issues,” including security guarantees for the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
“There are the visions of the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine — and we do not have a unified position on Donbas,” he said.
He made the remark shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his “slight disappointment” that Zelensky apparently had not yet read the proposal. Trump also voiced his belief that the Ukrainian president is not ready to sign an agreement.
As a reminder, one of the most controversial points in the initial 28-point U.S. peace plan was the requirement that Ukraine make significant territorial concessions to Russia, which would include ceding all of Crimea as well as the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
