Finally – Orban speaks out
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said today that the planned peace summit in Budapest is already “on the horizon” and that the next two to three weeks will be crucial for the course of the war in Ukraine, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
In an interview with the national radio, Orbán said that the United States has finalized its 28-point peace plan, which includes proposals from both Washington and Moscow. He clarified that the document has been officially approved and delivered to the Ukrainian authorities, and the first reactions from Kyiv are expected soon.
“We face two or three crucial weeks,” Orbán emphasized, adding that preparations for the peace meeting in Budapest are progressing.
Regarding the corruption scandal that erupted in Ukraine, Orbán commented that two main conclusions can be drawn. First, a significant portion of the financial aid provided by Europe and the United States has been redirected and has not reached its intended recipients. Second, in his view, Europe lacks a reliable mechanism to monitor the use of international financial assistance.
The Russian-American peace plan, jointly drafted by Russian and U.S. officials, contains 28 points that would require Kyiv to give up more territory than Russia currently controls, limit its weapons and armed forces, and abandon NATO membership. In return, it would receive a security guarantee similar to NATO’s Article 5, under which any potential Russian attack on its territory would be treated as an attack on the U.S. and its European allies, who would be obliged to respond.
