Orbán said aboard a plane en route to Brussels that he had written a letter to Putin asking about Russia’s response to a potential EU decision to use Russian assets for a “reparations loan” to Ukraine and whether Putin would take into account the positions of individual EU member states, Hungarian outlet Mandiner reported.

According to the Hungarian prime minister, he received a response indicating that Russia’s reaction “would be strong” and that it would take into account the positions of individual countries on the issue.

Orbán reiterated that Hungary does not support the use of frozen Russian assets within the EU, as this would represent “a new level of escalation.”

He also complained on X that the EU had “stripped Hungary of its rights” and violated the principle of “loyal cooperation” in the sanctions debate, adding that he “does not consider the principles of loyal cooperation binding” for Hungary.

“Hungary respected loyal cooperation regarding frozen Russian assets. The EU responded by stripping Hungary of its rights. This abandons the principle of loyal cooperation in the sanctions debate and sets a dangerous precedent. Unacceptable!” Orbán wrote.

According to Mandiner, Orbán joked that his favorite things in Brussels are “chocolate, the city’s main square, but above all – leaving.”

It should be recalled that an agreement on the use of frozen Russian assets has still not been reached, despite Brussels’ insistence. The key obstacle is the opposition of the government of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, which fears that the country could become a target of Moscow’s retaliation in the future over the use of Russia’s sovereign assets.
