Typhoon wreaks havoc: At least 140 dead; State of national disaster declared PHOTO/VIDEO
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared a state of national disaster due to Typhoon Kalmaegi, which has killed at least 140 people, with another 127 reported missing, and as authorities brace for an approaching typhoon, local media reported.
The hardest-hit area is the central province of Cebu, where floodwaters have swept through towns and villages, carrying away cars, riverside shacks, and even large shipping containers.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that more than 500,000 families, or over 1.9 million Filipinos, have been affected by Typhoon Kalmaegi, locally known as Typhoon Tino, Xinhua reported.
Kalmaegi, the twentieth storm to hit the country this year, intensified further as it crossed the South China Sea and is approaching Vietnam, where it is expected to arrive on Friday.
The Philippines is preparing for another storm, which could develop into a super typhoon and hit the country over the weekend.
