Zelensky stated that he does not intend to offer concessions to Budapest, to which Orbán responded that Ukraine does not defend Hungary and that Budapest owes him nothing, reports Euronews.

Zelensky: Orbán should offer something to Ukraine

In an interview published on Tuesday, Zelensky said that Hungary should support Ukraine in defending Europe instead of seeking concessions.

"I don’t think I have to offer anything to Viktor Orbán," Zelensky said.

"I believe Viktor Orbán must offer something to Ukraine, which is protecting all of Europe from Russia, yet even now, during this war, we have received no support from him—no support for our vision of life," added the Ukrainian president.

Orbán: Hungary’s security is guaranteed by NATO, not Ukraine

Orbán’s response came shortly after the interview was published. The Hungarian prime minister rejected the notion that his country owes anything to Kyiv.

"Ukraine does not defend Hungary from anyone or anything. We have not requested that, nor will we ever. Hungary’s security is guaranteed by our national defense capabilities and NATO, of which Ukraine fortunately is not a member," Orbán said.

He noted that Hungary has so far provided roughly €200 million in humanitarian aid and continues to supply the war-torn country with gas and electricity.

The prime minister reiterated Hungary’s strong opposition to Ukraine joining the EU.

"Hungary does not support and will not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, because that would bring war to Europe and take Hungarian money to Ukraine," Orbán said, adding that a status of "strategic partner" would be preferable for Kyiv rather than full membership.
