At the Reske–Horgoš border crossing, the EES system will be implemented starting November 4, and at the remaining Hungary–Serbia crossings by November 11, the consulate announced on Facebook.

According to the statement, registration points have been set up at the border crossings, and police officers will direct vehicles into special lanes for those who need to register.

The General Consulate noted that EU passport holders, including Hungarian citizens, will travel as before, since the changes do not apply to them.

Travel to European Union countries will change this month due to the new rules, and delays at border crossings are expected because of the upcoming holidays, so travelers are advised to plan their trips carefully.

The new system for recording passengers entering EU countries officially began on October 12. The EES is a border system, but it is not yet active at all crossings and will be gradually introduced; the new border rules do not apply throughout the entire day.

New border rules

The procedure at passport control has now been expanded, and longer delays are inevitable, especially for vehicles with multiple passengers and passenger buses.

In addition to presenting your passport at the border, it is now necessary to provide fingerprints and have your face photographed by a camera. At the same time, passports are still being stamped, although the EU plans that once the system is fully implemented, everything will be digital and the stamping practice will be discontinued.

The procedure takes several minutes per passenger, which naturally prolongs vehicle delays and causes traffic queues.

Border police have the authority to decide when the rules will be applied and when they will not, depending on the assessment of congestion. However, once the system is fully operational, delays are inevitable due to the large influx of travelers heading out for holidays and vacation.

Holiday for Armistice Day – an opportunity for travel

Due to the first mini-holiday of this school year from November 8 to 12 and the non-working day for Armistice Day, celebrated on November 11, a large number of people will travel for short trips, some to EU countries nearby or even further afield.

The days combine with the weekend, making it an ideal opportunity for a short vacation abroad without using annual leave.

So far, it is known that the EES system is being implemented at border crossings with Croatia, where it has been active since the system’s first day, and there are already impressions regarding its application and the resulting delays at the borders.

EU countries include Hungary, which will see a large number of travelers, both as a final destination and as a transit stop for some.

Other neighboring EU countries often visited by Serbians for short holidays include Romania and Bulgaria.
