Fiendish plot exposed: More than 100 attacks planned

A suspect accused of carrying out sabotage at power facilities in Germany had planned more than 100 similar attacks, including attacks on 40 sites in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, state Interior Minister Herbert Reul said.

Reul made the remarks before the state parliament’s Interior Affairs Committee after the suspect, identified only as Daniel V., was arrested on Tuesday in North Rhine-Westphalia over multiple alleged sabotage attempts across Germany.

According to Reul, as reported by Deutsche Welle (DW), the suspect had planned attacks on 40 power facilities in the state alone, with the aim of causing short circuits and brief disruptions to the electricity supply.

Police, the minister said, found a “notebook containing several handwritten entries” that included a list of more than 150 potential sabotage targets.

Some of them were located outside Germany, in neighboring countries.

“We have not only arrested a suspected perpetrator, but potentially prevented many more attacks,” Reul said.

He stressed that the investigation is still ongoing, but said the scale of the planned attacks raises the question of whether the suspect had accomplices or “was instead recruited by foreign powers.”

He emphasized that there is currently no evidence pointing in that direction, but that the investigation is progressing rapidly and that this possibility is also being considered.

The case comes shortly after an alleged failed drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport, which the German government in Berlin described as an attempted Russian hybrid attack.
