Kamchatka on standby; Earthquake after earthquake, the volcano spewed ash to a height of 6 kilometers
The Klyuchevskaya volcano in Kamchatka spewed ash to a height of six kilometers after a strong earthquake struck the area, Russian authorities said.
"On the Klyuchevskaya volcano, in response to a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale, an emission of ash was recorded at a height of six kilometers above the edge of the crater," states the report of the network of natural parks "Vulcans of Kamchatka", reports RIA Novosti.
According to Alexei Ozerov, director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, seismic activity often affects Kamchatka volcanoes, the agency said.
After the earthquake, gas emissions were recorded on the Avachinsky volcano at a height of 200-300 meters, so tourists were advised to refrain from climbing.
The network of natural parks "Volcanoes of Kamchatka" has temporarily closed tourist routes.
On Wednesday, Kamchatka experienced the strongest earthquake since 1952, with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale, according to the agency.
Earthquakes up to 08 degrees were also felt on the northern Kuril Islands.
A tsunami threat has been declared in Kamchatka and the North Kuril District, where a state of emergency has also been declared, as well as in Japan and Hawaii.
