The USA vetoed an immediate and permanent ceasefire

The United States of America today vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as it is not related to the release of the hostages.

The resolution does not state that the Palestinian militant group Hamas must disarm and withdraw from the Gaza Strip, which the US is demanding, AP reports.

The other 14 council members voted in favor of the resolution, which also described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic" and called on Israel to lift all restrictions on the delivery of aid to the enclave's 2.1 million Palestinians.

The draft resolution, seen by Reuters, demanded the release of all hostages held by Hamas and the immediate lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, as well as the safe and unhindered distribution of aid on a large scale, including by the UN throughout the enclave.

Nine "yes" votes and no vetoes from the permanent members - the United States, Russia, China, Great Britain or France - were needed to pass the resolution.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that by vetoing the US, it sent a strong message and emphasized that the country will not support any measure that does not condemn Hamas, does not call on Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza, draws a false equivalence between Israel and Hamas, or ignores Israel's right to defend itself.

"Hamas could end this brutal conflict immediately by laying down its arms and releasing all remaining hostages, including the remains of the four Americans they killed. Many members of the Security Council continue to refuse to acknowledge this reality, and performance efforts like this resolution undermine diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire," Rubio said, according to a State Department statement.

He added that the resolution would only authorize Hamas to continue stealing aid and threatening civilians, and that the US would never stop working to free all hostages.

"We will continue to support the delivery of aid to Gaza, without interfering with Hamas, and we will ensure that Hamas and other terrorists have no future in Gaza. The United States will continue to support Israel at the UN," he said.

Humanitarian organizations warn of the spread of hunger in the Gaza Strip and the lack of aid due to the Israeli blockade, criticizing the amount and method of distribution of aid by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which is supported by the US and Israel.
