"It's shocking"; Meteorologists announced a catastrophic forecast
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said today that there is a 70 percent chance that between 2025 and 2029 average global warming will exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
According to the annual climate report compiled by the UK Meteorological Office based on forecasts from ten centres, and published by the WMO, the planet is expected to maintain historic levels of warming even after two of the hottest years on record.
For the first time, the data also indicate a small one percent probability that before 2030 the world could experience a year that is two degrees warmer than in the pre-industrial era.
"It is shocking that (a melting of) two degrees is possible. It turned out to be only one per cent over the next five years, but the probability will increase as the climate warms," warned Adam Scaife of the UK Met Office.
The report added that there is an 80 percent chance that global temperatures will break at least one annual heat record in the next five years, increasing the risk of extreme droughts, floods and wildfires.
