Forecasters have warned that parts of the Midwest and southern United States are in for heavy downpours today, bringing the risk of potentially deadly flooding, severe tornadoes and baseball-sized hail.
One tornado was recorded last night in Kansas, about 145 kilometers north of Wichita, according to information from the National Weather Service.
Forecasters said storms with heavy rain are expected in parts of Texas, Mississippi and Ohio and will last through Saturday.
They also said storms could move over the same areas multiple times, creating dangerous flooding.
Parts of Arkansas, western Tennessee, western Kentucky and southern Indiana are particularly at risk of flooding, the weather service said.
Rainfall in northeast Arkansas, southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois and Indiana is expected to reach 13 inches over the next seven days.
Forecasters are warning that the storms could spawn tornadoes in Oklahoma and Kansas overnight.
The area most at risk of severe tornadoes includes Oklahoma City, as well as the cities of Wichita and Tulsa, Kansas.
Much of the country, from northeast Texas to Michigan, is expected to be affected by the storm today.
The area with the highest risk includes large cities such as Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Memphis, where a total of about 43 million people live.
Dallas, Detroit, Milwaukee and Nashville are also at risk of the storm.
"It is possible that in the next few days we will experience the amount of rain that would normally fall over the course of two months," said meteorologist Tom Jones of the National Weather Service.
