Catastrophic threat looms as powerful storm approaches: "Life-threatening conditions!"

Hurricane Fausto has strengthened into a Category 2 storm over the Pacific Ocean and is expected to approach the Hawaiian Islands next week, U.S. meteorologists said today.

The risk of damaging winds and heavy rainfall affecting the area is increasing, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said, adding that it is still too early to determine the storm's exact track or its potential strength, the Associated Press reported.

Fausto was located well away from land, about 2,090 kilometers (1,300 miles) west of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula and approximately 2,575 kilometers (1,600 miles) east of Hilo, Hawaii. Maximum sustained winds were around 161 km/h (100 mph).

The National Hurricane Center warned that swells generated by Hurricane Fausto could create life-threatening surf and dangerous rip currents along parts of Southern California.

As Fausto continued moving across the Pacific, Tropical Storm Berta was tracking along the Gulf Coast of Mexico.

 

The storm brought heavy surf and flooding to parts of southern Louisiana and Texas when it made landfall for the second time yesterday.

Later last night, the National Hurricane Center announced that Berta had weakened and dissipated.
