State of emergency still in effect in eight municipalities: Headquarters to convene again on Friday
Interior Minister Ivica Dačić stated today that the state of emergency is in effect in eight municipalities and noted that the situation in Serbia has relatively normalized after the adverse weather, and that the electricity supply has been stabilized.
Dačić said that the state of emergency is still in effect in Valjevo, Osečina, Mali Zvornik, Krupanj, Majdanpek, Sjenica, Ivanjica, and part of the Lučani municipality. He announced that on Friday, the Republican Headquarters for Emergency Situations will convene again to review the current meteorological and hydrological situation in the country.
Regarding electricity supply, Dačić stated that in Majdanpek, four local communities are without power; in Priboj, 141 consumers are without electricity; in Arilje, 325; in Čajetina, 22; and in Kuršumlija, 12 consumers.
"The situation there, at least according to these data, has stabilized," Dačić told TV Pink.
He stated that the Emergency Situations Sector, in cooperation with the Commodity Reserves Directorate and the Serbian-Russian Humanitarian Center, has provided 19 generators with capacities ranging from 120 to 750 kilowatts, ensuring that citizens have electricity. Dačić said that since January 4, the Emergency Response Sector has carried out 133 interventions, involving 297 firefighter-rescuers with 142 vehicles, 25 pumps, and three boats, and that 42 people were evacuated.
"The terrain is still being monitored; firefighters, police officers where needed, as well as the army, Red Cross, and civil protection units are engaged. I can say that the situation is relatively stabilized and normalized," the minister said.
Dačić stated that the Headquarters for Emergency Situations will convene once a week and added that prevention is important, as well as assessing the situation and drawing lessons.
He pointed out that problems with electricity were mostly caused by falling trees and that it is necessary to consider how to prevent such emergencies in the future. Dačić said that last year the Emergency Response Sector had a record 39,000 interventions and that more than 1,400 people were evacuated and rescued, with the sector employing 3,700 people.
