State of siege in Split: Get off the streets, stay indoors; Police on their feet

The president of the Mejashi city district and HDZ city councilor Toni Piplica issued a warning to his fellow citizens.

"Dear neighbors, a little less than an hour ago a man was seen walking around Smokovik with a Kalashnikov. The sirens sounded half an hour ago and according to my information, the police are still looking for him. I invite you all to stay in your houses and stay off the streets. If he went south, he is going towards the streets of Magistrala Solin, Sveti Spas, Sveti Liberan, the 141st Brigade of the Croatian Army and the center of Mejaši. If he went north, he is going towards Mostine and Neslanovac. Please share," he said.

The Split police received a report shortly before noon that a man was seen walking with a Kalashnikov in Smokovik. Immediately after the alarm, they went out on the field.

The police responded

"Today, September 16, 2025, around 11:30 a.m., the police received a report that a man carrying a weapon was spotted in the eastern part of Split, near the border with Solina.

Immediately after receiving the report, all available police officers were sent to the mentioned area to check the received information. A narrower and wider area was searched, but the report was not confirmed. In the meantime, two more reports were received from persons who had indirect knowledge of the information, that is, they learned from third parties.

A detailed check of the narrower and wider area has so far not confirmed the information from the report, and all available video surveillance recordings covering the said area have also been reviewed. Police officers continue to act in the field and we are taking all measures and actions to establish the facts related to this report.

The public will be informed about further information in a timely manner," announced the Police Administration of the Split-Dalmatia District.
