Generation Z rises up: Protesters hurl bottles and firecrackers at police, Barricades set ablaze PHOTO/VIDEO
Generation Z protests, held today in around 30 cities across Germany, escalated into multiple incidents and clashes with security forces. According to police estimates, more than 100,000 people took to the streets.
The most serious clashes were reported in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart, where some demonstrators threw bottles, stones and pyrotechnic devices at police, set barricades on fire and caused disturbances, Bild reports.
In Berlin, police intervened several times, using pepper spray and detaining participants involved in the unrest.
Protesters set off pyrotechnics, threw firecrackers at police officers and formed human chains in an attempt to prevent police interventions.
Police declared the demonstration over and called on those gathered to leave the area. In Frankfurt, the protest, which drew around 8,000 participants, initially passed peacefully, but clashes broke out later.
The Interior Ministry of the state of Hesse estimated that around 100 people were involved in the violence, throwing bottles, stones and pyrotechnic devices at police.
Several police officers were reported injured. In Hamburg, a powerful firecracker explosion was heard behind the main railway station, and pyrotechnic devices were also thrown at police officers.
In Cologne, police stopped and surrounded around 500 people suspected of being prone to violence, conducting identity checks on them. Incidents were also reported in Leipzig, where police used pepper spray, and in Stuttgart, where demonstrators threw bottles and pyrotechnic devices at police officers.
In Düsseldorf, by contrast, the protest was largely peaceful, with around 2,500 people taking part.
The demonstrations were organized by the "Gen Z regelt" (Gen Z Takes Charge) movement, with young people calling for better education, more affordable living costs, greater investment in environmental protection, and opposing cuts to social benefits and increases in military spending.
German security services had previously warned that extremist groups could exploit the protests.
Due to security concerns, some shopkeepers in several cities boarded up their storefronts with wooden panels. According to German media reports, several police officers had been injured across the country by the evening, while security forces continued their operations and made further arrests.
