Trump: Whoever joins the BRICS policy, an additional tariff of 10 percent
US President Donald Trump said that countries that join the BRICS "anti-American policy" will be charged an additional 10 percent tariff.
"Any country that joins the anti-American policy of BRICS will be charged an additional 10 percent tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this issue," Trump said on the Truth Social network, but did not clarify what was meant by "anti-American policy," reports Reuters.
BRICS is developing its own system
The BRICS founding countries in 2009 were Brazil, Russia, India and China.
This block was later joined by South Africa, and last year by Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The implementation of the new tariffs is postponed until August 1
President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, and the US Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, announced that the implementation of the new customs tariffs has been postponed until August 1, the "Guardian" reports today.
Trump said his administration plans to start sending letters today to US trading partners confirming the new tariffs.
"There could be 12, maybe 15 letters. We have already reached some agreements," Trump told reporters.
With a previously announced 90-day hiatus on tariffs set to end on July 9, the president was asked if the new rates would take effect this week or on August 1, as some officials have suggested.
"I think we will finish with most countries by July 9, yes. Either by letter or agreement," Trump said, but he was not clear enough in his statement, according to "The Guardian."
Wanting to prevent confusion, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick chimed in, adding: "The tariffs go into effect on August 1st, but the president is currently setting the rates and deals."
In April, Trump announced a base tariff rate of 10 percent for most countries and additional tariffs that range up to 50 percent. He later delayed until July 9 the entry into force of the new tariffs for all but those countries with a 10 percent rate.
The new date, August 1, allows countries an additional three-week delay, but also forces importers into an extended period of uncertainty due to uncertainty surrounding the imposition of tariffs.
