"The proposed new wave of enlargement, which has been on the cards for years but has also stalled on several occasions, notably due to opposition from France, is evidently supposed to give a new impetus to the EU in the wake of Brexit. But the accession of two small, poor and crime-ridden Balkan territories is hardly compensation for the EU losing one of its biggest member states, one of its biggest contributors, the fifth largest economy in the world", Laughland says.
This European integration and international criminal law expert claims that Albania has for decades been notorious as a centre for drug trafficking. Numerous reports in the press last year commented on how the country has become "the Colombia of Europe".
North Macedonia has a less sultry reputation but 30% of its population is Albanian.
"Moreover, when the EU holds its Western Balkan summit in Zagreb in May, Kosovo is to be invited. A territory of Serbia which declared independence in 2008, it is over 90% Albanian and effectively operates as an adjunct to Albania proper. Indeed, in 2018, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said he wanted to see Kosovo and Albania united by 2025, i.e. within the time frame envisaged for EU accession", Laughland, a former lecturer at the Sorbonne University, explains.
This first wave of new member states is only part of a long-discussed plan of integrating the whole of the Balkans including Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina into the EU.
"It is impossible to understand what benefit the EU imagines it will draw from “compensating” for Brexit by expanding into the poorest and most unstable part of Europe unless one pays close attention to what the decision makers themselves say. The president of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the new policy in a tweet with the hashtag #geopoliticalcommission. In other words, the expansion into the Balkans is driven not by economic rationale but instead by geopolitics", Laughland concluded.
Good message to our #WesternBalkans friends about EU enlargement process: Today the @EU_Commission proposes a credible & dynamic plan paving the way for opening accession talks with North Macedonia & Albania (🇲🇰🇦🇱). EU enlargement is a WIN-WIN situation. #geopoliticalcommission

Fake Italian Albo you mean where I called you a clown? Yep its very enjoyable. You’re such a disappointment, at the start I thought there was something there, but you have degenerated to a level where I am now questioning your mental condition. Do you ever wake up in the morning looking at palm of your hand and burst into hysterical laughter? If so, seek help immediately.

In fact, Laughland raises some very salient points. The EU is seeking two of the poorest countries to join the EU despite the UK leaving. All EU members have been told by Brussels that countries relying on the EU Fund or loans on good terms are going to have to curtail their expectations. In essence countries that used to put €1 into the EU Fund but withdraw €3 now have to reduce it to €2. Can you imagine bringing in Albania and Macedonia? They would be a terrible economic burden not an asset. That is what Laughland is talking about.
As far as Serbia denigrating Albos, there is no need since they are doing a fabulous job themselves with their criminal activities throughout Europe.

King.....you really have no idea how this all goes. Goodness me stop making a fool of yourself.
The article says that its about the accession process. This means first talks on talks that are to come. Turkey has been at this junction for some 30 years now....LOL.
You seem to think that Albanias EU membership is just around the corner....LOL.
Also note that in this article Albania is said to be the Colombia of Europe...... crime-ridden and corrupt......
Albania will not join the EU for many decades. And 30/40 years down the line there probably wont be an EU at all. So keep dreaming.
As for Kosovo, you do realise that there are 5 EU nations that do not recognise it as a country. They see it as Serbian land. Tell us how is Kosovo ever going to join the EU...
But keep having wet dreams...….. LOL

Nothing can ever grow, it's a natural law, not even China's economy. If something is growing it means that something else is going down because there has to be a balance there is no money going and money never goes to the wind to someone in particular because it is also a natural law. That is why someone like us does not need to pity the one to whom something is falling or to celebrate the one whose history grows until we become you (personal or wider anyway) for us to grow something at the expense of someone else who will fall. It is a simple economy and does not need to be vunderkind to be understood at all levels
(lalo, 8 February 2020 23:23)
I don't think EU leaders would call accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia compensation. But it makes for a good newspaper article title.

I find the lack of consistency and lack of backbone within all politics disturbing.
The old standard (Russia = Communism = PR of something about "left", "liberal", "anti-imperialist" vs. West = Colonialism = Imperialism = Greed = Exploitation) does not work.
The standard today is very disturbing because what I see, the only real might has green color and there are pictures of long-dead American presidents on it.
I am a very material, greedy engineer but I find all this disgusting. In addition I tend not to believe a single word (of politicians from USA, EU, Russia).
I won't even mention China.
I can't figure out what is the real stance of John Laughland because IMO a real stance should be consistent not with what USA, EU, UK or Russia expects from you but with your opinion.
Example:
- The "neo-Nazis" of Ukraine have no support from me. Their medicine is no better than the illness (corruption). I agree with John Laughland on that.
- The next is Milosevic. Would be John Laughland consistent: Milosh was known to hate everything even remotely Russian, far more than the Ukrainian neo-Nazis.
But no, here John Laughland is a total failure.
My conclusion: the backbone is missing. Both thumbs down.
BTW: with UK now out, he has no say anymore. Good riddance.

Germany dominates the EU enough as it is. Von der Leyen is a terrible choice for EU Commission head. If she wants her "friends" from Albania and North Macedonia to join the EU as a replacement for the United Kingdom then I wish her good luck! It is just another nail in the EU's coffin.

I don't think EU leaders would call accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia compensation. But it makes for a good newspaper article title.

the same you could write about every balkan country like -UK OUT,SERBIA IN? OR UK OUT, MONTENEGRO IN? AND AND AND or do you diaspora keyboard warrior serbs think that serbia is the DUBAI of Europe? LOL give my a break serbia is more corrupt than any country in europe

Stick to cleaning malls and write your opinions on the back of toilet doors since that is the best place for them. As far a corruption is concerned Serbs don't populate EU prisons like Albos.

The losers of Albania joining EU - corrupted and crime collaborators in EU who louder their money in Albania with corrupted crime ridden Albanian politicians.
The winners - poor and honest Albanians that look forward to democracy being properly implemented!
Lest look ahead of an Europe without borders and peace prosperity! No war!

Seriously though, when I woke up, I had to rub my eyes to this new piece of Russian propaganda sourced onto b92s international propa outlet.

And are you sure, everything evil, included toasted US-style bread with non-diary plastic cheese, meatless sausage and margarine Russian?
Like the poor Canadian lady who exploded on me in Porec, Istria: "see, Russians hating Americans, puff!"
Me: "sure, but why?"
She: "That fat Russian woman does not let me into this church!" (that was the Porec basilica, the Russian lady was a Croatian caretaker of the basilica and the time was about an hour before the basilica was scheduled to open in the morning).
I had to explain to her, going for a morning espresso and bakery and returning in about an hour will make a true wonder happen.
