Vatican has over 1 billion followers worldwide, and you think the Pope will bend to please Serbian orthodox church!? You got to be joking Ari.

The Vatican did not decide yesterday not to recognise Kosovo or object to it joining UNESCO because it was the in thing to do. The Catholic hierarchy seeks genuine reconciliation between eastern and western churches and yes the Pope will in the end wash his hands of the Ustasha elements.
It is a known fact that the road to reconciliation with the largest Eastern Church, Russian Orthodox, goes through Belgrade.
For the record Argentine had the largest Ustashi numbers after WW2 followed closely by Australia, mainly in Melbourne.

Ari - You're more optimistic that I am about this get-together. Remember Francis comes from Argentina where he served the catholic church in many leadership roles there. And Argentina was very accommodating to many war criminal Ustasha who fled through the Vatican rat lines. I hope you're right, but I remain skeptical.

No, my hope is that the Vatican will break from their historic support of Nazi movements in the Balkans. I could see how someone like you could view that as 'bending'.

Njegos, you bring up a good point about Argentina. Let's see what happens, so far he has slowed down the process of making Stepinac a saint. Although wtf kind of an organization makes a Nazi a saint?

But would not happen with the canonization of an Nazi Ustasha cleric. Stepinac was at best complacent over the holocaust against Serbs and Jews in the Croat NDH. Pope John Paul declared him a 'martyr', Pope Benedict was an actual Nazi [link], let's hope Pope Francis really is different.

Pope Francis has a 30 year relationship with Montenegrin-Serb Metropolitan Amfilohije, there exists genuine hope that Francis will repair relations between Serbia and the Vatican. He has done other great things as Pope and wants to visit Moscow soon. He sees building relations with the Serbian Orthodox Church as a step towards that.
