Controversial Croat WW2 cleric praised in Christmas message

The Nazi collaborator Archbishop Stepinac and the Vatican representative to fascist Croatia, Abbot Marcone . Croatia has recently renamed a village in Krajina after Stepinac. Several members of his clergy were involved in the genocide at Jasenovac - notably the Franciscan priest, Pater Miroslav Filipovic, who was one of the commandants of the camp.

From 1941 until 1945, the Nazi-installed regime of Ante Pavelic in Croatia carried out some of the most horrific crimes of the Holocaust (known as the Porajmos by the Roma), killing over 800,000 Yugoslav citizens - 750,000 Serbs, 60,000 Jews and 26,000 Roma. In these crimes, the Croatian Ustasha and Muslim fundamentalists were openly supported by the Vatican, the Archbishop of Zagreb Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac (1898-1960), and the Palestinian Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini. Pavelic regime killed in the war's third largest death camp - Jasenovac, where over 200,000 people - mainly Orthodox Serbs met their deaths. Some 240,000 were "rebaptized" into the Catholic faith by fundamentalist Clerics in "the Catholic Kingdom of Croatia" as part of the policy to "kill a third, deport a third, convert a third" of Yugoslavia's Serbs, Jews and Roma in wartime Bosnia and Croatia (The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican, Vladimar Dedijer, Anriman-Verlag, Freiburg, Germany, 1988).

What's horrible is the current state of Croatia is not much different and many continue to honor Pavelic and Stepinac and others while trampling the Jasenovac memorial particularly the HDZ party. Many escaped Ustase through the Vatican rat lines have returned to Croatia.

The Croatian professor and author, Viktor Novak, said it correctly - of Stepinac et al. in his book - Magnum Crimen (The Great Crime - a half-century of clericalism in Croatia)- The greatest villains who have walked the earth and whose crimes are abhorrent to the Nazis.

The Vatican Curia placed his book, Magnum Crimen, on their list of banned books and named Viktor Novak "an enemy of Catholic Church".

Croatia was born of dishonour, and will live with that dishonour forever.

The funny thing is that so many Croats have an overly high opinion of themselves.

I don't get any sense of apology for the wickednesses that were done, and find it perverse that they continue to think that Stepinac is some kind of saint. I think little of religion, and even less of the Roman church because of its blindness to what happened in a country that associates itself with both Jacinovac and Catholicism.

It's easy for the Vatican to get away with this because Serbian history and suffering is not common knowledge around the world. This does not mean that the Vatican should honour their criminals and evil men. Just goes to show how evil the church itself has become. I am not saying that Catholics themselves are evil. There are many good people of that faith and deserve all the praise but those people will not be praised by the church because the church is something quite the opposite and has been for quite a while.
The current Pope especailly is not worthy of that office so the evil will continue to be praised there.

It's only a matter of time when this great man becomes a saint. The only reason he was ever imprisoned was because he rise up against Tito communist regime and seen it as atheist scum. The real Nazi's are Serbs who continue to push for Nedic to be rehabilitated. Shame on you people.

Serb praise ww2 chetniks, but to be fair, state doesn't. Thry planned to build a monument to some chetnik in Montenegro, but state opposed it. Only reason croats haven't build a monument for Pavelic is because their pappas in Berlin wouldn't like it.

Unbalanced and correct, if you had an ounce of knowledge of history other than Wilkpedia, you would understand that the Chetniks led by Draza Mihailovich are not comparable to Pavelic and the Ustase, quite the opposite.

I see some of you hating our Pope but I didnt see anyone of you commenting when Orth. Church Leaders praised a recently released ICTY convicted Warcriminals as heroe. Or when the head of the Orth. Church called for War to take back Kosvo during the UNESCO bid or when Orthodox Church praises weapons and tanks everytime Serbia went to war.

Isnt that a little hypocritical? I`m not saying one wrong makes another wrong right but you know, just to balance things out a little.
