Well Germany is actually pushing Bulgaria towards talks with Russia over this - I do believe Germany wants the project to go through, but it wants to break Russia's monopoly on power and profit, and get these for itself and/or other EU countries.

To the fellow commenter stating "well done Vlad", I would like to remind him that Vlad is not feeling this "fine" these days after Brent Crude has dropped to historical lows, the ruble has turned into rubbish in a matter of one week and not even a desperate measure like raising interest rates to 17% didn't stop the slippery slide.
Comrade "Vlad" woke up to realize that the KGB has failed to teach him the principles of macroeconomics and currency depreciation... I guess when your sphere of influence stops at the countries that speak your language and you use energy blackmail as a mean of international policy, you will not win many friends.
SS is only a sad reminder to all countries involved in it how unfortunate it is to depend on comrade "well played" Vlad.
All the best to you all.

I guess Bozidar is realizing that it doesn't always pay to listen to the orders of hysterical warmongers like John McCain. Because of being his lapdogs, the Bulgarians are now losing much needed construction jobs, and an estimated 400 million Euros per year in transit fees that their pathetic economy badly needs from South Stream. The Russians should stick it to them, and stick it the Fourth Reich (aka EU), and dictate the terms of any future agreement. They hold all the cards here. Well played Vlad :)
Cheers!!

Corporations will want compensation which will run into billions at taxpayers’ expense.

They can want does not mean they can get. They have no basis for winning a case against anyone but Russia.
All Corporations want money at tax payer expense.

Never say never. The Russians may indeed revive South Stream, but if so we can be sure that it won't be on the terms offered hitherto. If the Germans have to beg for South Stream, then the Russians will make them pay heavily.

“Bulgaria has no intention of stopping the South Stream project, Bulgaria's Minister of Economy Bozidar Lukarski has said in Belgrade.”

Bozidar was not so much the minister but the South Stream itself and now that Bulgaria has missed this bozidar they go on demonstrating how stupid one can be. The game EU was playing with Russia reminds me an old anecdote when a man tried to joke over a fisher. He meant to ask him if the fisher had caught anything. If he says yes the joker thought I’ll tell him that in such waters any fool would catch but if the says he failed to then I’ll tell him that only a fool could fail to catch fish in such water. So he came closer and asked his question. The respond was - F*CK OFF ! Thus there always are other options than we think.

So said Russia about the Stream and now the clowns have to explain to their own peoples and to their innocent neighbors why should they suffer for the irresponsible idiots. If Bulgarians insist that being hostages of the rotten Ukrainian pipe and Pravi Sector’s blackmail then we are to wait for General Frost to come and see how Balkans will be heating their houses. Normans and Saxons have the North Stream excluded from the 3-rd Package while SS was deprived of such a privilege. And Bulgaria was the Troyan Horse being used to destroy this real Bozidar. If they prefer to depend on their historical Turkish rivals and buy gas at a higher price nothing is to be done.

The Russians are not too fussed over SS. It’s a take it or leave it for them as they can make money somewhere else, but the EU’s play has backfired badly on them. Trust me the Bulgarians are not talking about continuing discussions because they like to but because Merkel needs SS to proceed. German business people are breathing on her neck.
If the EU thinks it’s playing a game, Moscow can walk away from this deal and leave it all in Brussels’ lap. Corporations will want compensation which will run into billions at taxpayers’ expense.
