Why was it cancelled? Mainly economics but also EU politics. Russia's finances - and Gazprom's - are getting hammered by low oil and gas prices. South Stream was very expensive and not based on an economic case, but rather on political strategies (bypassing Ukraine and having leverage over the EU). With EU gas consumption and gas prices dropping, while there is more energy competition in the EU, the deal made less sense. Then the EU lobbied supporting members like Bulgaria, Italy and Austria to drop their support. This may be the first evidence that Russia cannot afford Putin's foreign policy.

Why EU? You did not deliver, now return NIS to your Serbian "brothers".
(Commentator, 3 December 2014 19:22)

Why should they? These deals were 'independent', and Serbia was stupid enough not to include a compensation. So NIS was given away without a tender way below its value, and South Stream might not be realized. Btw: The sale of NIS included handing over Serbian domestic gas resources worth some billion $$ to Gazprom.

Hahaha here we go again. First Russia refused to send us weapons during the 90's, refused to send peacekeepers in 1999 and now 2014 have refused to give us gas. Yes Serbs are difficult people to deal with and yes we are partly responsible for losing the Yugoslav wars, but that doesn't give an excuse for Russia to leave us out to die.

This is clear proof that Serbia does not need EU or Russia, its a shame how our country is being sexually abused from the West and the East. I cant see how Serbia cant be a regional power on its own. We did it in the Middle Ages and 20th century, whats stopping us!

Wow, the last comment was very interesting and one sided. Russia the good, the West the bad? when I was in Serbia I looked at all the nice looking houses the Serbian people had that were financed by people working in the E.U. and the money sent to Serbian relativies from other parts of the world and I wonder why you would bad mouth those wanting to help Serbia. What has Russia done lately other than disrupt the Ukraine and then have the gaul to think that the E.U. will not protect themselves from being hijacked by Russia cutting off gas supplies in the same way they have the Ukraine. This is same country that said the little green men in Crimea were not Russian and later admitted they were. No one would believe what they say now including blaming the E.U. Why is Russia not building South Stream on their own dime and living up to their commitment to Serbia is the bigger question.

The ever innocent Russia just like Serbia. Trying to isolate Ukaraine then steel it's lands that even Russia signed a treaty gauranteeing the borders. So much for eithers word or signature totaly useless. Then they wonder why nothing is going for them because their is some one more powerfull then EU, Russia, America, China the hole world put to gether. Act 4:25

For all the Serbian people living and trying to survive in Serbia today here is another example of what the EU is doing to Slavic Eastern Orthodox people in the Balkans. Only negativity comming from the EU towards the Eastern Orthodox Slavic people in Europe. Like I mention in my past comments the EU is a pryamid with Germany and all Roman Catholic Empire countries at the very top and the Slavic Eastern Orthodox people at the very bottom. Any dream of any progress for Slavic Eastern Orthodox people in Europe will be contested by the Roman Catholic Empire EU. The situation continues very stagnent in Serbia, no end in sight of the evil grip choking the life out of ordinary Serbian citizens. Today Serbian cival leaders wasting precious words and time with EU dialog, a direction that will never benifit any Slavic Eastern Orthodox country. For Serbia there should be no confusion in regards to the EU, it is only a DEAD END. The only window of hope for Serbia's future survival is to completely align and permanently conect it self to Russia, that my dear brothers is the reality of life and death today before us all! Russia is a large powerfull nation today closely allied with China and India to form a giant Eastern World Empire. Serbia needs to belong to this great Eastern Empire which is full of positive growth and expansion.
