WW2 Ukraine did not include the western Fascist-loving Galicians. The "Ukrainians" who fought and died to expel German Nazi invaders from Belgrade were mostly ethnic Russians from the south and east of what we now call the Ukraine. It was these same ethnic Russians who were the victims of the great famine (Holodomor) 1932-33.

Michael,
You have been drinking too much rakia. How could Russians who, according to you, died in 1932-1933 have fought in WW II, 1939-1945.

Why mistaken? It only shows their way of thinking. According to those Russian politicians, a big part of Ukraine is part of their 'New Russia'.

(Comm. Parrisson, 19 September 2014 06:41)

Please replace your "NEW Russia" for "OLD Russia" and every Russian will agree you. When we start to set Ukraine free you'll see how many flowers will be used to meet us. It will be a personal tragedy for you so ad hoq best if you buy a good bottle of vodka.

All Soviet fronts several times changed their names depending on the territories they were to set free. So was the 3-rd Ukrainian Front whose previous name ( October 1943) was South-West Front. Sure there were Ukrainians in the front but they merely composed more than 20% of the personnel. We fought as one nation and all were Russians including Uzbeks , Tatars or Ossetians. General Tolbuhin to command the 3-rd Ukrainian tried to persuade Tito to take more active part in Belgrade Operation but Tito was reluctant because his partisans had no such experience and armaments.

Any suggestions that those were the Ukrainians who set free Belgrade are provocations because Russians and Ukrainians have always been ONE NATION. Also we had 1,2,3,4 Ukrainian fronts plus 1,2,3 Belorussian ones + 1,2 Baltic Fronts. These 10 fronts have set Europe free and gave chance to the Russophobes be born. As you can see there are no Russian fronts and according to this logic Russians take no part in the process of saving Europe. It’s the American version of WW2 according to which D-Day is more important than Bagration Operation and Obama’s Grandpa set free Oswentsim. Maybe he fought within the 2-nd Byelorussky Front ?

"Mr Vladimir Yakunin is mistaken. The Soviet division that contributed the most to liberating Belgrade was, in fact, Ukrainian. This is simply a matter of historical record."

@IVAN-Which Ukraine brigade? The brigade that was recently killing women and children in East Ukraine. I am not familiar with that part of history, but if so, I am sure help came more from East than from Kiev. After all killings in East Ukraine, Kiev is finally giving them what they originally wanted. But the hardliners in Kiev needed little killing 1st hoping to take the land without people in it. Too bad. Horrible people.
