I think that the US and EU would, at worst, be left with wounded pride if they backed out of the Ukrainian crisis now. Why?

1) They will not back them up militarily in the event of war with Russia - even though they could probably beat Russia in a conventional war in Ukraine, they would suffer huge manpower losses and enormous financial strain backing yet another war - this time against a far more formidable opponent than Iraq, the Taliban or Serbia (put together MANY times over)
2) They don't have the money to save Ukraine from financial collapse (unless they float a loan from the IMF, in which case, Ukraine will NEVER be able to cope with the rates and end up having its infrastructure bought out by economic hitmen - so much for an independent Ukraine)
3) What does Ukraine have to offer the EU and especially the US anyway? It is a corrupt and bankrupt state, completely split geopolitically, poor as a church mouse, totally without the ability to defend itself and offers nothing in the qay of quality exports.

Rest assured if the EU and US had a chance of beating Russia in a fight they would have launched their war on Moscow a long time ago, but they cant simply because they dont have the money. Its all show and nothing else.
About 12 months ago there was an article in an Australian newspaper where it stated that when Russia and China were ready to start their move against the west they would do just that and there was nothing to stand in their way because the west was broke.
On the issue of NATO building up in the Baltics, that’s only a face saving exercise and nothing else and Moscow knows that too. The “conflict” is in Ukraine so what is the point of building up in the Baltic Sea when invading Russia is out of the question.

A split of the Ukraine is becoming more and more realistic daily. What seemed like a wild possibility now just seems to be the only way out of this crisis. Ukraine is evidently too intertwined with Russia and too deep in their "backyard" for them to simply just follow their own interests. It is no different to Georgia, it seems.
