Let's imagine icj1 that the "competition" for the Ukraine was between the US and the EU.

The EU offers the possibility of eventual membership of the EU in return for the Ukraine dropping tariffs etc on EU goods, flooding the country with EU imports and causing massive unemployment in the Ukraine when what is left of the countries industry collapses.

The US offers the Ukraine, 15 billion cash, cheap energy supplies and a tariff free market for the goods they manufacture and want to export (and goods that are in demand in the US).

Who would you go with icj1?
(commentator, 3 March 2014 02:25)

I'm not an Ukrainian so it does not really matter what me, a European or an American thinks. It's up to the Ukrainians to decide via their democratically elected representatives.

Now substitute the US for Russia and you will see your comments are motivated by Russophobia, not good economic sense.

Keep on pushing the US line Albania friends and keep enjoying your permanent poverty trap.

Eventually you will need a job and something to eat... then we can talk more sensibly.

Whats important is Kosova is nice and free from Serbian rule:) I honestly don't care what is happening to Georgia or Ukraine. Whats important is that my Albanian friends have their nice, independent country thats about to put together a nice and powerful military:)

I guess when you lost out on Kosova you can dream about other countries that have nothing to do with your own.

Go Ukraine! Go Russia! Go Georgia!! Wait, who cares. Kosova is nice and independent:) LOL!!!
(Captain Kosova, 1 March 2014 21:34)

I'd just make a small correction that for Kosovo is actually great what's happening in Ukraine. Russia will certainly remember this betrayal from Serbia in not supporting Russia in Crimea, even though Russia gave all support it could for Serbia in Kosovo.

The bandits and fascists of Anglo-American and French imperialsm went to war with Serbia to ensure Albanians in Kosovo have the right to self-determination. Why do the people of Crimea, and anywhere in the Ukraine, apparently not have the same right? Perhaps they should change their line to something like; 'The right to self-determination except where it involves Russia.' Or maybe they could just come right out with the truth and say something like; 'Global capitalism is in crisis. We need at least 10s of millions off the welfare rolls and breadlines and into the ground and this is our "democratic" choice because we are the bandits and fasicsts of Anglo-American and French imperialism and what we say goes.'

I hope Putin makes clear that the castastrophe will reach the rulers of France, the UK and USA as well. This seems to be the only thing they care about.

They don't look like Russian armed forces to me but just normal Ukrainian protestors.

The way this is working out, it is in Russia's best interests to take Crimea for many reason. 1. It belongs to Russia and has a majority of ethnic Russians wanting to reunite. 2. Ukraine having disputed territory prevents it from joining NATO or the EU. 3. This would anger the fascists in Kiev, thus venting anger further on the Russian speaking population. 4. This would motivate more regions in the east and south to break away.

Look, it's a win win win situation for Russia.

B92 is the only place where I leave my comments. I have no accounts nowhere. Once dropped here when Serbs suffered 1001-th attack to mud them because you too are so irrational. Other peoples very often just calculate what is preferable. It’s always funny when your rivals explain you what is better for you. But Serbs and Russians as you know become irrational sometimes. In April 1941 the Centiks too did not look rational. A Slovak friend of mine once persuaded me that Czechoslovakia was wise not to resist in 1938-45. Serbs and Russians are different. And this is why we are still outside of the mainstream on the continent.

Sometimes I deliberately seek no compromise in my comments. There comes times when you stop to care what will somebody else thinks of you. Ukraine is such a bleeding injure that everybody in Russia cares. Both Serbs and Russians are divided nations and we have similar fates. So Serbs will understand us better than anybody else. Serbian pain is also echoing in Russia each time we look back. Russians feel shame and response for what we let the Evil do to our friends worldwide and Serbia is always mentioned. I guess if a chance to improve the things comes Russian elites and people will be morally ready. I believe that after the late Slobo and Yetltsin Russia is more ready for strategic relations than the Serbian side.

Ukraine's security forces thwarted in all regiones attempts to undermine the Ukrainian state, except for Crimea which makes sense. Crimea is the only region where Russians make a majority while in the rest even the Russophiles would never condone a Russian invasion. In fact, the Russian aggression will bring even the East of Ukraine together to the West, since they know that despite speaking Russian they are Ukrainians. And they don't want war for Putin's game. And I promise you that not even Crimea you will get. If you try, Russia will be a pariah state which will not get from noone, not even China, which fears that scenario, help. You only help Albanian ambitions, fortifying that Kosovo is independent and even Serbs will start to realize that they are just pawn's in Russia's global chess game, ready to be sacrificed the next best moment, e.g. Crimea.

Here we go ! So don’t waste your time to explain what we do in the Ukraine today. Russian logic is different from what the rest of the world thinks or says. Our own lands inhabited by our own people are on the stake. So we care not much of what will happen after we are back here. Something irrational is in the behavior and thoughts of common people here. They don’t care what sanctions or other sequences our activities will have for us. Outside the USA we are the only country where people do not care about security. But with 27 million of Russians abroad the lust for unity is really great. People here are more radical over the Ukraine than the government and Putin. Follow the new Russian legislation. See the ultimatum Donetsk declared today.

We suffered and retreated too long. We betrayed our friends and rivals elsewhere. So it’s time to throw stones today. It were us that they mudded 20 years and it were us that they trained the Maidan against. So now just use the moment to counter attack. I believe that minimal goal that we have is to return at least 12 main and most prosperous regions once included here by Bolshevicks. It will be naïve to think that we need only Crimea. Though we fought for it for 200 years and lost it as a present of Khrushev to his Galitsian wife’s birthday. Though we fought for it for 200 years and lost it as a present of Khrushev to his Galitsian wife’s birthday. But as far as I can judge minimal piece Russian people will be satisfied with will be the 12 mentioned regions that will cut the rest of the Ukraine from the Black Sea.

Rote.Do you know Serbs are on side of Russians always, right or wrong? Irrational also? I don't know but that's how it is.

Ukraine wouldn't dare attack Russia for Kiev would be a flat and dark smoldering piece of land. Like I already mentioned, the tide has well and truly turned. Countries now aligning with the West are breaking apart. First Georgia and now Ukraine. tsk tsk tsk, Washington and Brussels are losing it.

“will bring even the East of Ukraine together to the West, since they know that despite speaking Russian they are Ukrainians.”

DON’T BE A PRISONER OF YOUR IMAGINATION! AND BEST IF EACH TIME BEFORE YOU WATCH THE NEWS FROM THOSE RUSSIAN LANDS DRINK AT LEAST 200 GRAMMES OF GOOD VODKA OR RAKIA. BUT IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BECOME AN ALCOHOLIC DON’T WATCH TV EVERY DAY.

But the Ukraine has too often been governed by people who don't care less about Ukrainians... Just to advance the US agenda of isolating Russia.
And now they reap the benefits.

Ha, ha...I guess we need people who can govern Ukraine just to advance the Russia agenda. There is just a small problem that the Ukrainians do not want that, but I'm sure Russia will "convince" them to love Russia :)

Pull the other one John, the Russians wouldn't even be building South Stream at all if the Ukranians wouldn't keep turning off the perfectly good existing pipeline.
A sensible Ukrainian gov would have done everything possible to ensure reliable service and continued to pocket the handsome transit fees. But the Ukraine has too often been governed by people who don't care less about Ukrainians... Just to advance the US agenda of isolating Russia.

And now they reap the benefits.

Now substitute the US for Russia and you will see your comments are motivated by Russophobia, not good economic sense.

Keep on pushing the US line Albania friends and keep enjoying your permanent poverty trap.

Eventually you will need a job and something to eat... then we can talk more sensibly.
