Governments, including the US, spy on their own people.

Right or wrong ... this is not new information.

I don't believe at the story that Angela Merkel is only now learned that the U.S. NSA eavesdropping. And Germany has its own spy organization, as well as other EU countries. Maybe it's carefully chosen this moment in time to complicate relations with the USA. Do not forget that the USA was on the brink of bankruptcy.

What is alarming is that so many governments around the world are fine with the US spying on their citizens. If those same governments were to spy on their citizens it is still a breach but to allow another country to spy on their citizens is unforgivable.
What right does the US have to spy on me? I am not an Ameircan citzen nor do I have anything to do with them. My own government should be able to protect me from it. The question is why aren't they protecting us? If my government has a resason to have me under their surveilence then I have the right to take them to court using our own laws to protect me but when my own government virtually hands me over to another country I have no way of knowing it let alone defending myself against it.
Glad to see that heads of goverments are treated the same way at least.

Apology or not, more important is that the US of A finally stops this massive spying and gross violation of basic human rights. And I don't refer to spying on some politicians, but on spying on millions of ordinary citizens outside the USA. That is the real scandal.

P.S: I'm somehow happy to see that Madame Merkel is treated by the USA just the same way as millions of other ordinary citizens! We all know, wiretapping phone calls is only 'fight against terrorism'! Who knows, maybe Mrs Merkel is a potential terrorist?
