"This opinion that the Communist Regime was a good thing will die with the brainwashed indoctrinated generation which lived through it."

...says a man who lives in a country with internet data retention and more than 4 million surveillance cameras.

In these former "Eastern bloc" countries, the demographics of the voters of political parities which succeeded the old Communist parties tend to be the older portion of the electorate. The younger generations tend be either more liberal than socialist or they have right wing views.

Czechs really never got much time to be free and independent - they went practically strait from communist occupation to being under the EU bureaucracy & dictates.
There are more options than simply communism or what they have now. I wonder how many want out of the EU.

In the first Czechoslovak Republic between 1919 until 1938 the Czech Communists were politically active and numerically strong. In the elections of 1946 they received 38% of the vote in Parliament. Klement Gottwald the pro-Stalinist Czech prime minister worked to undermine the Czech democracy and the Communist party under Gottwald seized complete control of the country and made it a Soviet puppet.

I had hoped that the Czechs would have learned their lesson about trying to deal with the Communist party of Bohemia and Moravia but I was wrong. It was too bad that the Communist party wasn't outlawed in the early 1990's. To my knowledge the Czech Republic is the only ex-east bloc nation that has so much nostalgia for communism.

... but nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

As you get older, the brain tends to fade out the bad memories and feel sentiment for the good ones.

If you asked for a vote for a return to the communist system, few would actually want it.

.......

By the way Ari, giving 0% taxes on a discriminatory basis is unfair competition and has severe repercussions you have yet to consider. It wouldn't be a good idea.

In a democratic system people are FREE to vote for the Communist Party but under a Communist system people were not free to vote for competing parties so it seems to me that any Czech who prefers the Communist Party should cast their vote at election time

"The nostalgia for the previous regime and the phrase "it was better under the Communists" makes it comeback in the Czech Republic periodically, and as the agency's regular polls show, this is tied to economic crises, reflecting a desire for the kind of social safety that was guaranteed in socialism."

Know the joke: In communism, all people were equal - equally poor :)

No way, the communists party members liked getting everything paid for by the working sector, todays private sector?

Ask any public sector if the government should run everything, and even in Serbia you would get 60% communists and the region.

I agree its a problem all over the region this idea that there should be a large public sector. Even my parents are nostalgic about how everything was "free" and covered by the gov't but they truly don't understand the dangers in that which are clear to younger people now given the failures of communism.

The Balkans need to shake their dependence of the gov't and become entrepreneurs. Communism set us back but we have to move forward. There is a such thing as too much foreign investment absolutely, but the same applies to too much gov't involvement and dependence on them to "cover" everything. The most ideal is strong private domestic ownership and small/medium size businesses. And that is what Serbia should strive for and offer 0% taxes to any domestic (non tycoon) businessmen creating jobs.
