I'm happy to hear this great international patriot, Vojislav Koštunica, is still alive and kicking. Serbia should listen to his advice.

As much as Kostunica has a point, Serbia cannot stay in the same place. As much as I distrust Tadic, having got into power only because of the direct meddling by foreign nations in serbia's elections, he only won by a razor thing margin. This is a good thing has it gives him little latitude to sell out.

By going to the GA he is basically asking them if they want to tear up the Helsinki Final Act and basically allow secession by a single party.

On all your head be it, if you so will.

It can't be clearer than that.

Brussels and Washington are furious because the resolution gives them no 'wiggle room', i.e. the possibility to bend its meaning out of all interpretation as they have done on numerous other very serious occasions.

So what do we see? Serbia calling for talks, the Albos screaming (Hyskender whatever) 'NEVER' mein gott! What wonderful political support Pristina is providing for Belgrade.

Washington and Brussels' hands are effectively tied. If they argue against it, then they also look bad because they themselves, global preachers of democracy, human rights and freedom of choice are shutting the debate down.

That is why they have said very, very little publicly and a lot behind closed doors.

I have no doubt that they are going through UN law with a fine tooth comb to find any way possible to kill Belgrade's resolution, not to mention threats and bribes to other countries to skotch it.

It is pathetic to see these declining powers behave like two bit banana republics and having to use such tactics. The eyes of the world are on them. The damage will be immense!

Resolution 1244 does not protect Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity - the ICJ ruled on it. Through its references to Rambouillet, the resolution allowed for the "will of the people" living in Kosovo to be considered in determining the region's final status at a time when it was obvious what this would be.

Mr. Kostunica seems right since we still have UN resolution 1244 which protect Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. And continued support from Russia and China, 5 EU states, and big nations like India, Brazil, Argentina, Libya, Ukraine, Belarus, Egypt, Kazakhstan and others.
The best way is to stick to the existing resolution. Last ICJ verdict was a result of "pressure" from powerful western countries lead by the US.

I echo Mr.Kostunica statement. It's imperative for Government of Serbia to abandon initiative in UN General Assembly and stick with UNSC Resolution 1244 as a only legal document.Gentlemen do not spread yourself too thin searching for support in places logically impossible to benefit you.You can counter the argument often used by the West "Serbia lost its right on Province of Kosovo because of brutal crackdown on majority Albanians By Milosevic" Serbian argument:Albanians lost its right to become independent state for continuously to date, attacking Serbian Orthodox Churches and Monasteries and the people.Barbed wire around monastery still present is a powerful argument that Albanians are not ready for independence.

Kostunica is right. But I don't understand why he thinks Serbia had any hope at all bringing any case to the ICJ. These are the same people running the ICTY, are Serbs seeing any respect for justice there?

Charli

I believe Kostunica is right about this. And if he is, what is Serbia's next move? How much self-induced embarrassment do they want to endure?

Who knows...he may be right.

It could be a trap as the West pushes our pawns around in order to nail the coffin shut on Kosovo. If Serbia should loose this round, what next? Why would Serbia consult with EU and US prior to submitting to the UN? That was very unusual and surprising to hear.

Will this make it more palitable for Serbs that Kosovo is lost? It's certianly food for thought.

What Kostunica said is not very much true, it is in fact absolutely true. I have no doubt that he is the only Serbian politician who really cares about Serbian interests as oppose to Tadic and others that constantly talk about EU interests and seems do not care about Serbian interests at all. How else would you explain that Tadic is the only president of the supposedly sovereign country who decided to let others decide on that matter (sovereignty).

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader and former prime minister said that Serbia could suffer a “great defeat,” before the UN General Assembly, especially after the recent negative opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legality of Kosovo’s independence proclamation.

Right on Vojo. The man knows what he is talking about.

All political parties, and all Serbs for that matter, must come together now to decide where to go from here. We are up against powerful enemies, but it isnt the first time. CCCC.
