Hi, Ataman -
About Hungarian unhappiness - this is nothing so new as to be attributed to current politics, is it? Long ago (very long ago) I took a course on Hungarian history and culture at college. The professor, an Hungarian, mentioned that Hungary had the highest suicide rate in the world - he attributed it to the population density: he said there was no place in the country where you could go and not be in sight of another person. (An article I read years later attributed the gloom to an aging population living in dying villages, apparently with not a soul in sight - take your pick.)
As for the US, I was amazed to see that it was at 14-15 (tied with Austria). With all the belly-aching in the papers these days about the economy and the nasty mood in Washington, I thought we'd be waaay down the list.
I'm not surprised at the relative rankings of Serbia and Kosovo, though - you can tell this just from the tone of the newspaper articles. After all, Kosovo is coming off a very low starting point - new roads and bridges, police that don't beat people, corrupt politicians being - sorry, allegedly corrupt politicians - being arrested, a route through the Accursed Mountains to the sea ... Anyone would have to admit things are better than ever before. But Serbia is trying to return to the level it enjoyed 20 years ago, altogether a discouraging effort, it would seem. We're going to be faced with something of the same problem here in the US, in the next few years as we put our economic house back in order - let's see how the happiness level responds.
