Ataman, I'm not taking my car but a rent-a-car with a green card already. I have made enquiries with a few rental companies and did not find one with insurance that covers Ukraine and Moldova. If I buy border insurance it doesn't cover me for theft. I'll just have to do North-Eastern Europe some other time.
(Zoran, 14 June 2010 23:58)

Try Polip rent-a-car in Hungary. They are fine with any country. Their cars are US models by the way, for good or bad. Pretty unusual feeling for Europeans to drive these cars at home.

Other rental companies are very picky. As far as I know, Polip is pretty unique.

Zoran,
You have a good grasp of the sitch. I too thought EU until I started learning more in detail of the Lisbon treaty.

I can understand the exemptions Czechs/Slovaks sought before signing. For mine the best part, the SAA has been signed and apart from adopting some regulatory standards of the EU that is all Serbia needs to prosper. It has attained a good position.
Nice link on your first post, have you seen this video watch the Hungarian MP

Farage is a gem.
Serbs now have to ask what sort of input can it possibly have entangling itself here.

The UK then dropped their veto too then?! More grist to the Zagreb mill where they are convinced the brits are anti-croatian and pro-serb!

As for Romania, it looks like being in the EU still doesn't improved their behavior:

Pressure on media in Bulgaria, Romania condemned

It looks like they still have to leave the country to find a semblance of normalcy!

Mircea, I am visiting in August. I am staying in Timisoara, Bucharest, Constanta, Brasov and then back to Timisoara. I'll have a car so I can visit whatever is within driving distance. I also wanted to go to Ukraine and Moldova but I couldn't get insurance.

(Zoran, 14 June 2010 13:51)

I sent you an e-mail about it, this is not how it supposed to be. The key word is "Zelena Karta" or "Green Card". Unfortunately there are some few pathetic insurance companies everywhere who just can't handle this. They deserve the fate of dinosaurs.

Under normal circumstances even for Kosovo residents there shouldn't be a problem to get insurance for, say, Ukraina or even Russia.

Companies in UK are the worst, so who is in UK and wants to drive to Balkans or ex-USSR should ask for "green card".

Even in Poland or Hungary the police is looking for Green Card - they do not know, that UK insurance is valid or that Serbian license plate is automatically a third-party liability insurance for Hungary.

So it's better to get it no matter, what. If an insurance company says "no", either cancel the coverage or (for Serbs and Albanians) buy that "green card" simply on the Serbian side of any border, these cards are being sold even in Merdare for a very nominal fee (like 10 Euro).

Cars with American license plates belonging to expats can get that green card, too - but it's more tricky. Still possible tough but not as easy.

For unlucky souls who still missed and do not have that "green card": Ukrainian borderline insurance is one of the cheapest, costs about $30 for an entire year.

What is absolute no-no with any country of exUSSR: never attempt to cross the border with a car made out of two wrecks and VIN numbers not matching each other. They will give you a hell.

Thank you EU.

That sounds much safer bet than Somalia. But the western part of it even for me is way to expensive.

Best bet: go to Belgrade, take the overnight train to Venice, stay the day in the Venice than go back with the same train. Belgrade-Venice-Belgrade costs about 100 Euro. One day in Venice is enough to see most of it.

The European Union approves SAA ratification? Oh my god! Another proof that the west (and the few eastern new EU members, these traitors) must HATE Serbia.

Now all the western HATO puppets like Tadic will force Serbia to join this totally unhealthy, bankrupt and doomed Union instead of staying outside and independent and, as a close alley of Russia, one of the wealthiest countries in whole Europe with the highest living standards! Now Serbia is almost lost! Mark my words! The only hope left is that the EU won't exisit any more until 2015! Luckily, Greece is doing a god job, they have always been a good friend of Serbia ;-)

A few years ago, I would have been jumping up and down for joy over this. Considering the troubled waters the EU is currently in, I recommend Serbia take as much time as needed before full EU ascension.

Same here Mike, I was once a great supporter of the EU project - open borders, free trade and even the single currency but after seeing how dictatorial it can be I've since changed my mind. I believe even Serbians are seeing the light as this is not really generating that much interest.

I'll keep an eye out for those Churches.

Zoran, I've been to Timisoara. It's a real nice place. Make sure you visit the three Serbian churches in the city. The one at Uniri Square is my favorite and there are some wonderful people to strike up a conversation with there (their idea of "going to a Serbian city" is driving to Vrsac. Novi Sad is when they really want to hit up an urban scene :) )

In fact, Uniri Square is my favorite place in Timisoara. Enjoy!

It should've stayed with its original principles being a trading association alone.

Indeed and let us hope that once current EU dissolves some kind of trading union which could include many more than 27 states wil be reborn because the lack of trading barriers seems to be the only adventage of this organization which has otherwise nothing to do with what it intended to become. After Lisbon treaty the whole thing should have been renamed as Misguided Inhumane Remote Controlled European Absurdistan abreviated as MIRCEA.

I think that Serbia will obtain EU candidate status in December 2012.

Serbia will probably begin accession negotiations in 2013 which will take 7 years to complete.

Serbia will join the EU in 2020.

Long live the European Union!

Your last two identical postings-not to mention the one's before-above show that your contribution to the debate on Serbia's potential EU membership is close to zero.

I have been wondering for sometime now whether you're a real or a ficticious person
whose real intentions are not to contribute to any debate but to piss off other posters by repeating the same slogans when the occassion arises.

It has always been my opinion
and i agree with Kate that the EU won't exist by 2020-certainly not on its present form-for Serbia to Join.As a matter of fact if the sovereign debt crisis which has hit Greece,Portugal,Spain
Hungary and now the uk continues we could have the death of the single currency and possibly of the EU itself a lot sooner.

The problem with the EU has always been geo-political since there can never be a one-size-fits-all solution to problems of 27 states with so many diverse systems of governance. The EU should never have intoduced single currency and introduce federalism from above. It should've stayed with its original principles being a trading association alone.

Zoran and Leonidas,

The Euro is a strong currency and the Eurozone will continue to expand.

On 1 January 2011 Estonia will adopt the Euro.

Zoran,

The Soviet Union was an evil empire which destroyed Romania's economy during the 50 years of communism.

Stop comparing the EU with the Soviet Union.

Zoran, if you come to Romania, I recommend you visit the following cities: Timisoara, Brasov, Sibiu ( European Capital of Culture in 2007), Sighisoara, Sinaia, Cluj and Bucharest.

Also, you should visit the Romanian Black Sea Coast, as well as the monasteries in the Bucovina region close to the border with Ukraine.

When will you be visiting Romania?

Ataman, I'm not taking my car but a rent-a-car with a green card already. I have made enquiries with a few rental companies and did not find one with insurance that covers Ukraine and Moldova. If I buy border insurance it doesn't cover me for theft. I'll just have to do North-Eastern Europe some other time.

Try Polip rent-a-car in Hungary. They are fine with any country. Their cars are US models by the way, for good or bad. Pretty unusual feeling for Europeans to drive these cars at home.

Other rental companies are very picky. As far as I know, Polip is pretty unique.
