The treaty signed on reduction of long-range warheads between Mr Obama and Medvedev in Prague in April will be welcomed worldwide. But the reduction of 30% of nuclear weapons only by two sides in the whole world may appear as a joke considering that the left over nukes in the other countries’ arsenals are enough to destroy earth a hundred times over.i I wish all the countries having nuclear weapons signed the pact and comply with laid down rules. We must not minimize the threat from some uncontrolled countries which repudiate cooperation with UN as to the proliferation of their nuclear arsenals. Some terrorist groups pose a safety hazard by striving to come into possession of nukes.

"It will limit the number of strategic nuclear delivery vehicles to somewhere below 800 on each side. The treaty will also set a new lower limit for the number of strategic deployed nuclear warheads down to 1,550 on each side, Isaacs said. "Currently, the United States deploys about 2,100 strategic warheads - Russia somewhere above 2,200. So this new START treaty would accomplish a 25 to 30 percent reduction in the number of deployed strategic warheads on each side,"

Although any reductions in nuclear weapons is welcome still the numbers above indicate that both US and Russia have the capacity to blow the world up many times over.

I've also heard another explanation for this nuclear deal which seems amazing to me.Maybe our Russian friend Rote could elaborate.

It's said the real reason behind the nuclear deal is that 10% of US electricity is supplied from nuclear reactors powered by old Russian missiles.

Currently the stockpile of old Russian warheads in the US will only last for about 15 months which is why this deal was done.

Fancifull explanation? I am not sure.
