The US policy of the "war on drugs" was probably one of the reasons that has made the war in Afganistan unwinnable.
The US prohibition of heroin has turned it into massive cash rich industry for whoever controls the poppy fields. It is the junkies in the streets of western cities
that finance this war.
The Taliban and Al Qaeda both raise and fund their fighters from this industry, the West created. And they can afford to pay more to the mercenarywarlords, and tribesmen than even the US can in bribes to switch sides
Obama doesn't need any longer to rely on arm-chaired generals and crippling budgets on bringing death, destruction and exile to hundreds of thousands of Afgans in the faint belief that this might stop islamic extremism. It is the wrong war and he should call it a day whatever the political cost.Prolonging it will result in a bigger defeat and even humiliation.
