"Russia shouldn't worsen tension in Georgia"

Russia should help settle tension over Georgia's rebel regions instead of contributing to it, says Condoleezza Rice.

But Joe, Russia now is a much stronger ecomonically and still hasn't invaded any other country...

Also in English Alsatian is the usual spelling and is also a breed of dog - same as a "German shepherd dog".

Russia has issued passport to Abkhazians because the Abkhazian passports cannot be used for international travel.

alsatian,

Let me crarify 2 things:
- I am not an Albanian
- You are not an Alsacian - otherwise you would spell Alsacian correctly. You are a Serb maybe living in Alsace, where I studied for few years.
Otherwise this is also for PJD: Russia did not invide a foreign country in the last 10 years because until now it was much too poor....was crawling out of a deep economic slump (depression would be the right world). So she did not have the economic means. Membership of the small Eastern-European countries in NATO also helps a great deal. NATO defends them against a country, who brought them so much suffering in the last few centuries.

I love the line of thinking by some of the posters here..

Just because the U.S. caused trouble in Iraq...Russia is entitled to cause trouble on its neighbors...

Just a refresher though ...

All the pre 1990's wars that the U.S. found itself in were largely in the context of the cold war. Most of those wars were instigated by communist (read China, Soviet union) backed groups. Also, in case you forgot, Yugoslavia owed much of its prosperity to the fact that it did not become the Soviet bloc's lapdog. You have Tito to thank for that.

1st Iraq war was a UN sanctioned war aiming at driving Sadam back from Kuwait.

Afghanistan is a no-brainer unless you're a complete bigot.

2nd Iraq war..ok fine...the US president lacked the brains on that one.

Wars in Yugoslavia - don't go blaming the U.S. because people in the Balkans don't know how to co-exist.

In Georgia, Russia issued Russian passports to the Abkhazians (who are not Russian..they even speak a different language) blatantly undermining/challenging the sovereignty of Georgia.

Some "peacekeeping"...

Rice's comments seem to ignore the fact that Russia has peacekeepers in both breakaway regions. Also Georgia shelled South Ossetia recently.

"In the ninties one had high hopes that Russia will develop as a peaceful democratic European country like Germany, France or UK."

I am not aware of Russia being a dictatorship or attacking or invading any other countries since the 1990s unlike the US and NATO has done. The only conflict it has been involved is in Chechenya which is inside its borders.

The U.S. shouldn't worsen tensions in:

* Iraq
* Afghanistan
* Iran
* Kosovo, Serbia
* North Korea
* Venezuela

Joe, that is your, probablt Albanian, perspective of Russia. The track record for the last 10 years for the US/GB/EU, has been militant and brutal. What invasion or war has Russia started in that time frame? You just back the West because they decided to back the K_Albanians.

Joe

Contributing to violence and creating problems became essential parts of Russia's foreign policy.
To protect Georgia that small country should be admited in NATO ASAP. NATO will be needed more than ever to defend the small Eastern-European countries from a neo-imperialist Russia. The danger from the East will greatly increase in the next years as Russia will put an ever growing chunk of her huge oil revenue into military hardware. There will be also economic blackmail using the "oil weapon". Sad perspectives for Europe indeed. In the ninties one had high hopes that Russia will develop as a peaceful democratic European country like Germany, France or UK. It is a shame that the division of Europe will be perpetuated in a different form.

I totally agree with the first two commentators. Why is the US sticking its nose into Georgia? The country is far from Washington. This is Russia's back yard. Could it be something to do with the dirty, oily dollar that American chases around the world?

Condoleezza Rice.

"The violence needs to stop and whoever is perpetrating it, ..... "

US Newspeak in full force .. isn't it obvious Ms Rice that the US is the main instigator of all the main wars in the world today and since WW2. Why are you (The USA) so intent on conquering the world ! Not everyone wants to live in Disneyland, go home and leave the world in peace.
