I disagree with your assessment. I now think it was a ploy by Kostunica all along. He failed to get Tadic to agree on a coaliltion. So his initial support of Nikolic was to cause the West to panic so that they will twist Tadic's arms for him. And the West probably did just that and Kostunica is now going to remain as Prime Minister. The West was also sufficiently worried to now agree to sign the EU visa agreement and consider restarting SAA. It really has nothing to do with the West being more or less powerful, just political strategy on Kostunica's part which appeared to work in this case. Fi9nally, the Serbs know that they have historical and cultural affinity to the Russians for centuries and it takes more than just a visa agreement or SAA talks to negate this.

Envar & Victor,

All the Serbs you spoke to must have been bullet proof. However, my relatives lost their lives and all their properties in Krajina.

Why is that not one positive can be said about Serbia by an Albanian? This government is a positive sign, don't turn it into some behind-the-scenes power push from who knows who. Clean up the criminal leadership in Pristina before you cast judgement on other nations.

Hey, the USA did NOT want Kostunica to remain in the Serbian government, ANYWHERE, at all.

I do not know where any of you folks, Albanians or others, get the idea that the USA wanted Kostunica.

The "poor old" American press always runs the man down as do some people in the Bush Administration.
His victory was not the news they wanted to hear!! They wanted Tadic's pal/pals to win.

I was in Belgrade a few years ago and I witnessed the same negation of facts (Victor, 16 May 2007, 12:53)

I was in Beograd in 1995 when the US wrongly slapped international sanctions against Serbia who all but ceased any trading with Bosnia-Herzegovina at the urging of Holbrook.

People would have starved if Serbia was not self sufficient in agricultural and food products.

The Hospitals did not have medical products which were also placed under sanctions.

So, not sure what Belgrade you saw but I am sure you were not denied food, water and medicine.

Well Victor..Answers to what??

If they didn't know what was going on, what does a Serb villager from Vojvodina, Sumadija or whever have to explain his actions??

Are you suggesting that perhaps some poor Louisianna catfisherman should explain US atrocities in Iraq??

Afrim, you jump from political influence to hunting down Mladic..I don't understand your chain of thought.

I suppose that some of you guys might want to stick to the header of the topic..

You're all over the place in your comments Afrim. You speak of Serbia being goaded and influenced by international actors as if that's a negative thing. Last time I checked, Kosovo wouldn't even exist, let alone be considered for independence, were it not for the good graces of the US and other international sugar daddies. You also speak that Serbia was "forced" to have a pro-Western government, as if every Serb voter is anti-democratic. Apparently you missed the collective opposition many Serb citizens and politicians gave when Nikolic was elected Parliament Speaker. I suspect you're only seeing what you want to see and not the whole picture.

Your opinions are your own, but they don't attest to your broad knowlesge of events in Belgrade. There's certainly more going on than nationalism and populism.

Aca,

If atrocities were committed against Serbs did you try to ask yourself what could have been the reason for it?
Did you try to think that maybe the Serbs did things that were not very humanitarian?

Victor

pre 16 godina

Aca, of course I know that innocent Serbs were also victims of atrocities but not on the same scale as Bosniaks. You too seem not to realize that.

Serbia knows well the suffering during the wars as she took in all refugees who came to her. They are either still waiting to go home or have no home to go to, and all have stories of the atrocities committed against them. Did you talk to them, Victor?

I was in Belgrade a few years ago and I witnessed the same negation of facts from most of the Serbs I talked with. They don't realized what has been done. Even today, 15 years later, Muslims from Bratunac are burrying their dead and 500 are still missing. It is so strange that during the war that no Serbs seem to think that one day they would have to give answers about their doings!

After the influence of EU and USA, Serbia was forced to have a pro western government and the pro russian plan failed with the resignation of Nikolic. This shows who is more powerfull, EU&USA or Russia.
Remember serbs, even in your very own country and internatl affairs it was EU that had more influence than Russia... forget about the rest.
Some commentators here say that Serbs did no crimes at all, so then why your police are searching for Mladic and others?
