Russia may have the superior air force, but they can't secure total air superiority with all the anti aircraft systems Ukraine has received from the West.

The Russians have lost around 160 aircraft, by conservative estimates. I've also read 257, though that wasn't necessarily an objective source. If western AA systems were so crap, they wouldn't have shot so many aircraft out of the sky. It wasn't only Soviet systems shooting all those Su-25, Su-34 and Kamov Hokums out of the sky.

Kyiv was a target, so was Kharkiv. Why would there have been fighting around these two cities if they weren't? Whole armored columns were en route towards Kyiv at the beginning of the war.
