It was a war, in which people from the same family were partially declared croatian or serbian based on religion.

The goal on both sides was religious clean areas, as croats and serbs are the same by language, behavour, love for sports, food,.... No side was from a moral point of view better, the victims were civilians on both sides.

BTW, they wren't from the same family either. One's Croatian and the other a Serb. That tells you they are from different families. If they come from a mixed family then they again choose to declare themselves one or the other and are free to do so.
