Why did Yeltsin choose Putin as his successor?

What Liberal reforms? Human rights, freedom of the press, free elections are just some of the items lacking in Czar Putin's empire.

Yeltsin never chose Putin. It was powers behind the Presidency that gave Putin Yeltsin’s position. Yeltsin’s downfall was caused by allowing NATO to bomb Serbia so he was pushed out of office.
Its interesting that Putin is widely known as Vladimir the Saviour, and what is even more interesting his harshest opponents do not dispute this title, since it was he that lifted Russia off their knees and into being a world power again.
He is accused of being a dictator and the Russian system is undemocratic. I was born and raised in a democracy and still wonder how the US system is called democratic since in the last 180 years only Democrats and Republicans have held power. Same parties have provided Presidents over the same time period.
The problem with western countries is they all claim to be democratic, respect human rights and so forth but I have not seen these same countries adhere to this ethos. It’s more like “do as I say not as I do”.
