The promises have been broken, and what Zaev and Rama are afraid of becomes realistic

Miraculously joining the EU will somehow eliminate tension between different ethnic groups and no longer fuel nationalism??? What do they think is happening in Catalan region of Spain? Picking mushrooms?
No, its all about Zoran Zaev and Edi Rama making big promises to their respective people that joining the EU would bring wealth to their country. That is what its all about and now that the EU is short of cash and will not take on new members, all their promises of a better life are coming apart at the seams and their hold on power is looking tenuous.

Since Yugoslavia dissolved, there was always going to be a big question mark over the existence of the banana republic called Macedonia. Yugoslavia guaranteed the current Macedonia sovereignty and its constitution. Macedonia is hoping that the EU will take over from Yugoslavia, in fact opposite has happened. Bit by bit, every concession they made is creating their own demise. Like the UK will dissolve by 2025, Macedonia will cease to exist.

The only one who should worry is Zaev.

In general: Nationalism will not decrease by EU talks or membership, on the contrary it increases.

As for China and Russia, these so called fellows/academics that actually do not understand this region well at all need to get a better scapegoat. China and Russia are in the Balkans in the same capacity they have been there 5, 10, 15 years ago.

I never understood our idiot politicians and also our population also thinking that joining EU today will somehow as a miracle solve all our problems. Indeed its better to be equal in class called Balkan rather than a second hand citizien in a class called Europe.
We wasted 30 years of democracy with corruption, criminality, mass emigration etc to just open our eyes now and see we are again on the starting point. I wished someone comes in power with the idea to make things better for the albanian people, albanian cause, albanian problems first and only after see if its a need to join EU or whatever other organization. This is not easy because for decades now even the new generation has this idiot idea that getting rich faster by doing criminal things is better than beeing someone worthy for you society and your country. How can you blame them, for years the only thing they see on TV is peeps who start as poor politicians and end as top rank bilionaries in the region in just a decade

Did they REALLY think that the EU, during forseeable future, would let these countries into the union??? With a huge amout of organized crime, poor people, nepotism, bribery, pollution and a risk for asylum seekers.
No not a chance in universe. A year ago, I talked with three french diplomats about this topic. One of them said 30 years and the other two said 30-40 years if everything goes smooth for the mentioned countries.

I have nothing against North Macedonia. However I am very surprised at some of the decisions they have taken over the past 20/25 years.
Firstly I could not understand why they wanted to break away from Serbia. Looking at how it is, they don't really have any friends around them, apart from Serbia. To the east they have Bulgaria who have for a long time had their eyes on a chunk (or all) of Macedonia. To the south there is Greece. I need not say any more about Greek/Macedonian relations over the years. And then they have Albania....ye, those land thieves who are determined to rip a chunk of Macedonia for their greater Albania dream.
Macedonia is occupied by nato and are told what to do (sovereign nation my ass). And now we see how the EU is taking the pi*s out of them.
Can anyone tell me why the N Macedonians wanted to go their separate way...??? To me its a real mystery with no benefits.

What is there to educate on self about Macedonia? The Albanians have more support and respect around the world than the so called mythical state called Macedonia. The Albanians living within Macedonia are step by step gaining what they need thanks to the concessions made by so called Macedonians to appease the EU and NATO. Recognising Kosovo also meant border changes within Macedonia. Well done so called Macedonias, make your country great again like Tito times. Macedonia Macedonia, Macedonia!!!!!!!!!!

Now what? Go back on the deal with the Albanians, which grabbed Macedonia by the boo-boo and now is laughing? Go back on the deal with Greece, who now is laughing? Go back on de-recognizing "kosovaaaa" for the Srbs, who now are laughing?
