For good or bad, it looks like we have some Freudian passion for failed dictators, criminals and whom-not (think: child rapists and cannibals).

Nothing bad with that passion. Unfortunately (for them) some child rapists, mass poisoners and war criminals (see Saddam, Kadhafi) do not listen to us - and later on they deeply regret their decision.
