"Focus on reforms, rather than on whether EU wants you"

The head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Sem Fabrizi, says candidate countries for EU accession should focus on reforms, which should not be merely cosmetic.

You translate everything to suit you siptari. EU entry or not reform for yourself to better living standards. Nothing to do recognizing a bunch of criminals wall to wall.
No recognition ever.
Down with illegal kosovo*.

Make note of these words. Reconciliation, good neighbour relationship, looking out to the future. They all convey one meaning: recognise Kosovo as a state.

Absolutely agree! Focus on Serbia, rather then weather EU wants you. Many opportunities in the past were lost because of the focus on EU.
Here is an example - today politicians are lamenting over population decline especially in rural areas. But, when there was a chance for a huge increase in exports of domestic (Serbian) products, they passed it.

And Serbian response was...

Why is it that EU's interests always come first? Government should focus on us, not on EU.

There is much to be said about reforming because it is necessary rather than simply just being a requirement for EU accession. However, the pace of reform and its acceptability to the public, especially if it takes (more) money from their pockets is critical. EU officials wagging their fingers won't work. Balkan natives don't take kindly to being told what to do and many could start an argument in an empty phone box. I'm fairly querulous myself and need to reach a conclusion about an issue in my own time and in my own way not with someone standing over my shoulder.
