Stop destroying the Balkans with hydropower plants, our flora and fauna are the most diverse and beautiful in Europe. We need to preserve our ecosystem.

Joe A so rite. "Srpska" entity has no rite or Serbia to infringe on Bosnia. Especially when the majority population of the Drina River region. Bosniak population was murdered ethnically expelled etc and lets not forget Srebrenica Serb genocide of Bosniaks. Like Dodo tried to steal Gacko power stations and fence them on to Cheks. Serbia/Serbs making trouble for them self's and continue in their incorrigible ways.

HPP are problematic. First of all, they are bad for nature because HPP change the hydrology of an area and thereby vegetation and habitat for biodiversity. Next to that, there is built up of sedimentation that need to be removed. There are several HPP in the region that no longer in function because of the excess built up of sediments and organic material (which also makes them heat sinks). It is too expensive to remove that material. There is the danger of flooding when there is excess and torrential rains and there are plenty of examples of that happening in the region. Down stream areas get flooded and inundated with nutrients so sanitation then needs to be applied.
In the whole Western Balkans hundreds of HPP ranging from small to big are being planned. Often people don't even know that there is one planned in their area and they will be forced to relocate. That was the case in Albania where people one day found workers for a HPP construction company taking measurements. The people chased them away.
Everywhere around the world HPP are being abandoned and taken out of action. The natural flow of rivers is being restored and biodiversity returns. In the Balkans they are going to destroy their rivers. There are alternatives to HPP. HPP are only good for the companies that build them and for the politicians that receive sidekicks. Better to improve transmission lines efficiency, energy use efficiency and to invest in gas turbines and renewable energies.
