The Serbian people wish to move on and create better place for our children. Stop with the hate against my people. As far as European Union is concerned, I believe that France and Germany will leave after England. NATO countries that bombed Serbian are the same that created atrocities in Africa, Asia, South America, New World, Middle East...and so on. He does not owe anyone a reason for his choice. Leave him alone..haters.

A Serbian player can go to UK and play, insult UK and pay no price, while an Albanian (Xherdan Shaqiri) who plays in UK can't go to Serbia to play

Yes, a Serbian can go and travel to the UK and EU with more freedom than most Albanians from Serbia’s KiM province. It is true, the EU has formalized the discrimination against the Albanians from Serbia, who refuse to hold Serbian passports. Your criminal gang leaders in Pristina have openly admitted that your sponsors in Brussels are Albanophobes. Perhaps you should seek better leaders or foreign sponsorship?

If you are going to put UK on your name, don't make sweeping misleading comments about the UK. To imply people who question whether not wearing a poppy shows disrespect for the war dead are therefore nationalists is incredibly unfair. My experience is totally contrary to that. People in the UK wear the poppy as a mark of respect for people who gave their lives while motivated to defend freedom and resist tyranny.

Nationalism is a nasty thing and it is specifically not included in the symbolism of the poppy.

Sadly, there was lots of unjustifiable killing in Bosnia and other countries and it eventually invited military intervention. However despite a lot of illegality in the conflicts, there were lots of decent people in military service to their countries. Many of these died in these conflicts which were not of their own choice and in which they were were forced, under orders, to be involved in what was actually the mafia illegality that drove much of the atrocity.

This footballer may have a reason why he finds it difficult to wear the poppy, but he could wear it for the innocents amongst his countrymen who died. However, although I think he could find alternative ways of thinking, I am not going to make any judgement against his decision.

I will wear a poppy for any of those decently motivated victims of whatever nationality they were.

NATO commits genocide against Serbs, demonizes them and sanctions them and he is supposed to wear their logo? No way, he did the right thing. Good for him.

Or he is Criminal or he is a coward.
NATO bomb Serbia to save innocent people’s lives from Genoside and is he aware of that, that poppy that he refused to wear that poppy means a lot to millions of people around the world.
God bless any soldier that is a live and have died in fight to saving peoples lives and God punishes them one that refused to respect that.
You should be a shame of your self,England have give to you a lot and you disrespect that.

1. It was his choice. He has the right to do so AND he has a good reason. He also gave a very good explanation why now and not before, for those who weren't lazy enough to inform themselves BEFORE rushing to write their own useless opinion on the matter.

2. Why play for the UK in the first place? Only children and drunkards can make such a question. And, pray, what is he to do? Sit home and be a keyboard warrior like you? You clearly know nothing about anything. Least of all sport.

What? It’s honoring British WWI veterans too!

Well, Matic's people shouldn't have started WWI then. Wouldn’t have had a war and soldiers to commemorate if it wasn’t for the Serbs asassination of Archduke of Austria.

quick enough to take the BRITISH pound. quick enough to wear the poppy previous seasons. No respect at all for your decision. would have, if you never wore the poppy previous seasons. The irish lad at stoke has all the respect in the world.

Matic, very noble of you, however, I’d have more respect for you if you had refused to play in the UK because they bombed Serbia as members of NATO. Now, your former fans will think of you as a selfish hypocrite. Don’t be surprised if the English fans throw more that poppies at you.

Hey Serbs, forget 2025, when it comes to joining EU 2125 is too early for you.

P.S. Knowing UK bombed Serbia why did he go there in the first place? Again, evil West better than mother Russia.

Matic and McLean are both entitled to their views and have very valid reasons for not wearing a poppy.

That should be the end of it, but in the last few years in the UK the poppy has become a tool of nationalists to abuse anyone who doesn't wear one.

It's a real shame as it was a good, respectful way to support servicemen and raise money for those who had their lives forever changed in combat. Now nationalist types go all out to have the biggest poppy flag and anyone who has any sort of discussion about it is singled out for abuse online and also in public.

McLean has had huge amounts of abuse, even from his own team's fans, and I bet the same type of people will abuse Matic, despite having his own valid reasons.

Idiots.
